How to go on a windsurfing trip to Cape Town
Book a flight to Capetown, you can usually find some decent flights with Qatar airways where you only have one stop in Doha. Book accommodation in advance, we recommend the Sunset Beach area - make sure you find an Airbnb accommodation close to the beach and with a locked garage where you can store your car and surf gear overnight. Rent a car that's ready for you when you land at the airport and make sure it has roof racks so you can tie your surf gear to the roof. Remember to bring two long roof straps from home, which you can hardly ever get at car rental centers.

So you just need to book these 3 things: Airfare with windsurfing luggage, accommodation with garage and car with roof racks - and you're all set! If you haven't rented a car before, rentalcars.com is a good place to look - just make sure you pay and book with a credit card in your name and choose one of the more well-known rental companies located at the airport.

PSST. It is usually a good idea to buy car insurance from home, for example through rentalcars, so you don't have to fight with them at the counter. In addition, Cape Town is an optimal destination for 2-3 travel companions to travel together, so you can split the cost of the car and accommodation and at the same time there is someone to share the wild experiences with.

Do you need to bring your own surf equipment?
YES for sure! A windsurfing trip to Cape Town requires you to bring your own windsurfing equipment. It's both expensive and difficult to rent windsurfing equipment down there.

Don't have your own surf gear? Then take a look at some of the others surf travel destinations that we have recommended here on the blog - there are several great destinations where there are better opportunities to rent windsurfing equipment at the spot.

REMEMBER! When booking your flight to Cape Town, choose an airline where you can pre-book windsurfing equipment on the ticket. Here are a few tips that are REALLY good when flying with windsurfing equipment in general. 1) Book a ticket with as few stopovers as possible, the more stops you have, the greater the risk that your equipment won't arrive with you. 2) Book your flight ticket directly with the airline and never through Kiwi, billigeflybiller.dk or similar. 3) Make sure your chosen airline has all flights on the trip and that there is no fine print stating that parts of the trip are operated by another airline (as they may have a different policy on windsurfing equipment). 4) Arrive 2-3 hours before your flight departs and make sure you check in your surf gear for the entire trip so you don't have to

5 tips for your windsurfing trip to Cape Town
1) To windsurf Cape Town you need to be a stable wave windsurfer who can plane in footstraps and trapeze on a 90-110 liter board. Your water start must be on point and you must be able to handle or be prepared to fight waves that are powerful and over two meters high. 2) The best time of year to travel to Cape Town is January to March, when the wind is most stable and the weather is legendary. 3) Cape Town is a very unique windsurfing destination in the sense that you can go there for just two weeks and get an excellent surfing vacation out of it, but you can also stay for the whole three months of the season. 4) If you've done your preparation from home, you'll quickly get into some great windsurfing and even if you choose to stay for months, there will still be spots you won't have time to explore. 5) Cape Town has a great food scene with many delicious restaurants and if you go to the right places you can really get value for money. Beer and drinks in the clubs are also much cheaper than we are used to back home. So all in all, good quality and relatively low prices.

Our rating for Cape Town - 4 stars
In many ways, Cape Town should be awarded a clear 5-star review due to the destination's unique qualities, such as; great food, magical nature, fantastic windsurfing, great climate and easy accessibility from Copenhagen Airport. However, it should also be mentioned that Cape Town can have days when the wind doesn't blow. In addition, many of the spots are reserved for experienced wave surfers where you need your own rental car and equipment and the country suffers from high crime rates - making the destination less optimal for windsurfers going on their very first windsurfing trip. So start with Jeri, Fuerte or Dahab and you're ready to conquer the coasts of South Africa!
